Lourinhã

LOURINHÃ

Is a historical village with almost a thousand years, just 3 km (less than 2 miles) away from the Pata da Gaivota. You can find there loads of different places such as restaurants, supermarkets, service stations, pharmacies, banks, clubs and night bars.

The name Lourinhã possibly originated in the period of Roman domination when a villa was located in the area. The origin of the medieval village is linked to Jordan, a French knight who took part in the successful Siege of Lisbon in 1147. King Afonso Henriques granted Jordan the region of Lourinhã as fief and allowed him to grant a letter of feudal rights to its settlers in 1160. The name Lourinhã may be related to the origin of its feudal lord, since Jordan was from the Loire region in France.

The area of Lourinhã is known by the Late Jurassic findings of dinosaurs and other fossils, and gives the name for Lourinhã Formation. The Museu da Lourinhã holds the main dinosaur collection.

A good selection of these beach bars are just 5 minutes driving distance at Areia Branca beach with a very enjoyable environment.

Church Santa Maria do Castelo

Known as Santa Maria do Castelo Church, the former Lourinhã Main Church is located at the highest town area near a viewpoint that offers an excellent view. It is a curious example of 15th century Gothic construction. The decorative programme surpasses the temple’s structure.

The capitals are ornamented with human figures and vegetable motifs, whereas the portico motifs are rather naïf and crude with a dramatic touch. Interior motifs reach the highest naturalistic mastery of Portuguese Baroque. In this temple, you can also contemplate the baptismal font, as well as the beautiful rose window above the main door (National Monument).

 

 

 

Museu LourinhaMuseu da Lourinhã

Is a museum in the town of Lourinhã, west Portugal. It was founded in 1984 by GEAL – Grupo de Etnologia e Arqueologia da
Lourinhã (Lourinhã’s Group of Ethnology and Archaeology). The museum has very complete exhibits of archaeology and ethnology, but the main focus of the museum is the palaeontology hall, which presents casts of famous dinosaurs, as well as fossils recovered from the Late Jurassic Lourinhã Formation. Among these is the famous theropod nest found at the beach of Paimogo, which contains eggs with embryos inside, probably belonging to Lourinhanosaurus.

 

 

 

Dino ParqueDino Park

Embark on a more than 300 Million Years’ time travel and find out the Dino Park, the biggest Portuguese open-air museum and the largest Iberian exhibition of dinosaurs’ fossils from the Late Jurassic.

You will find 120 real sized dinosaur models, a museum with an extraordinary paleontological heritage and see, in the Live Lab, how the palaeontologists work.

 

 

Adega Cooperativa of LourinhãAdega Cooperativa da Lourinhã

Check out the local cooperative winery after a long day learning history – definitely a wise decision. This place is one of the three in the world (yes, in the world) to produce wine spirits (a very strong alcoholic drink), aside the French “Cognac” and “Armagnac”. They do guide visits with a gif at the end. A must go.
